This page started out as a project for one of my classes, and since has become my actual page. So it's got some stuff about me on it.

What is in a name?

So what's with the name of the site? Well, it comes from the name of the Greek god Proteus - to paraphrase Wikipedia, he can foretell the future, but, will change his shape to avoid having to; from this feature of Proteus comes the adjective protean, with the general meaning of "versatile", "mutable", "capable of assuming many forms": "Protean" has positive connotations of flexibility, versatility and adaptability - and those protean qualities I would like to design my life around. Tomorrow I might get hit by a bus wile crossing the street and die, or I might get paralyzed from the waist down, or I might come across untold sums of money. I don't know, but I might as well prepare myself for the future, or conversely, enjoy today as my last on the earth. Which brings me to my next point.

On Renaissance

Posted by Jane Doe on September 25, 2006

I do my best to be a kind of Renaissance Man, and I hope to have that reflected in this site. I enjoy a great many things, and I aspire to be great at them as well. Among them are art (including painting canvas, miniatures, photography, digital art, and crafts), music (listening to, not creating, which I simply have no talent in), technology (being well versed in it, writing code, and effective use practices), reading, writing, humor, the outdoors, healthcare (a fairly new interest), philosophy, and some other things. I have to strive to maintain some sort of balance in my life considering that I have as many interests as I do. Balance is a thing both hard to attain and maintain, and I am not perfect, often times I fall on the side of doing too much of a thing that could be considered inconsequential, and too little of a thing that, while minor, is important. So I have to adapt, not only to the world and people around me, but myself as well.

So take a look around

So it is here that I will show some of the things I've done. Be it a small application that I've written, a piece of art that I am proud of, musings on life, pictures of my cat, or progress to my career goal of becoming a therapist. If people want to come and check it out, that's cool, if not, that's cool too. If I get hit by that bus, at least there will be a partial record of me somewhere, at least until my webhost turns off the site.
